5 Ways to Wear One Adjustable Chain in One Week
Let me show you what one chain can do, because I wore the same one five different ways last week and nobody noticed it was the same chain.
Here it is at 24 inches, long, over a sweater. Now watch. I hold the gasket, I don't yank it, I pull the chain straight through, and it comes up to sit right at my collarbone. Same chain. Different outfit, different neckline, and I never went near the clasp.
That's the whole trick, and everything below is just five versions of it. Five outfits, five settings, one chain.
First, the move

There's a small gasket on the chain and the chain runs through it. Hold the gasket in one hand. Take the chain close to the gasket with the other hand, not way out at the pendant. Pull straight through.
Straight through is the part that matters. Pulling at an angle works the chain against itself, and over enough mornings that's how a chain wears out. Straight, and it will hold your length for years.
Pull the other direction to make it longer. Same rule.
1. The tee shirt day, at 18 inches

Crew neck tee, jeans, running errands. Set the chain to 18 inches and put one small pendant on it.
At 18 inches it sits just below the collarbone, above the neckline of the shirt, out in the open where you can see it. A crew neck sits high, so a longer chain disappears behind the cotton and you have essentially worn nothing.
Keep the pendant small here. The shirt is plain, the chain is fine, and one little thing at the throat is the whole look.
2. The button-down day, at 20 inches

This is the setting I see skipped the most, and it is the one I would most like you to try.
A collared shirt already has a shape built into it. Two more inches puts the chain below the last open button instead of tucked behind the placket where it vanishes. Twenty inches, and suddenly the shirt has a necklace instead of hiding one.
Wear it bare or with something small. The collar is already doing plenty.
3. The sweater day, at 24 inches

High necks and turtlenecks are where most necklaces go to be invisible.
Let the chain out all the way to 24 inches and wear it over the top. Now it has its own space on the front of the sweater instead of fighting the collar for the same three inches of neck. This is also the setting where a bigger pendant finally earns its keep, because there is somewhere for it to hang.
Long over a knit is my favorite of the five. It looks so pretty, so pretty over a heavy sweater, and it takes about three seconds to set.
4. The V neck day, at 18 or 20 inches

A V neck makes a shape and your job is to follow it, not cut across it.
Set the chain so it sits inside the V rather than lying on top of the fabric at either side. On most blouses that is 18 inches. On a deeper V, go to 20. The wider the V, the more room a pendant has, so this is the one day a slightly bigger pendant looks right.
If you set it and it lands right on the point of the V, take it up an inch. You want it above the point, not sitting in it.
5. The evening, at 14 inches and bare

Somewhere to go, something nicer on, and the temptation is to add more.
Do the opposite. Pull the chain up to 14 inches, take the pendant off, and let it sit high on the throat as a plain line. When the dress is doing the work, the necklace holds a line and stops. That's it.
Bare and short reads finished. Long and loaded reads busy.
Getting it on in the first place

All five of those start the same way. Let the chain out to 24 inches, slip it over your head, then pull it down to the setting you want.
So if you have ever stood there with your arms up behind your neck fighting a clasp you can't see, and eventually asked somebody to come do it for you, that is the morning this fixes. You never have to fumble with a clasp again. There is still a clasp on the chain, a real one, and it is how you put pendants on and take them off. You just never have to use it to get dressed.
The over the head part needs the length. Our chains that reach 24 inches and up will go over your head. A chain that stops at 22 won't, and I won't pretend otherwise.
Five outfits, one chain
18 inches for the tee shirt. 20 for the button-down. 24 over the sweater. 18 or 20 inside the V. 14 and bare for the evening.
That's a full week off one chain and one pendant, and the only skill involved is holding the gasket and pulling straight through.
If you want to see every length on a real person before you set yours, they are all in this length guide. And if you are picking your first chain, take a 24 inch, because it gives you all five of these settings and it goes over your head.
Set it once, pull it straight through, and wear it at that perfect length.
